British Columbia Water Conditioning

February 7, 2011 at 9:52 pm | Category: Water Conditioning

Conditioning of hard water is done so as to achieve certain desirable properties. Achievement of these properties can improve the usage of water for various purposes. Hard water has a lot of disadvantages as they form scales and cannot be used for cleaning and washing purposes. Selection of the water conditioning system is based on the hardness of the water available from the surroundings. It should be installed effectively and maintained by a qualified plumbing contractor so as to reduce operating costs.

It is necessary to test it before installing the conditioning equipments. The property of the water may influence the part of the conditioners that need to be used. This process may lead to the selection of the entire system instead of partial satisfaction. Some of it may require a salt free conditioner or a softener, which can be incorporated to the system.

Purified water should be soft and free from impurities. If the ground water is sufficiently soft purification system alone can be used. Softening involves removal of salt of calcium and magnesium. Ion exchange resin system can be installed to the water conditioning system, which removes these salts.

The ion resin consists of negatively charged particles. These particles absorb the positively charged metal particles like calcium and magnesium. So it gets softened. Sodium is not removed in this process so the soft water contains sodium. But the sodium is present only in desirable amounts so there is no need of its removal and is a healthy mineral.

Once the water is softened the impurities need to be removed. Normal filters can remove sediment particles. Once they are removed water needs fine filtration. Carbon activated filters can be used for this purpose. These filters remove odor-creating impurities like chlorine and chloramines. Special filters can be used to remove iron, manganese and iron sulphide. These particles may affect the taste of it. So it is necessary to remove so as to get conditioned water, which is safe to drink.
