Sodium is not removed in this process so the soft water contains sodium. But the sodium is present only in desirable amounts so there is no need of its removal and is a healthy mineral.
Once the water is softened the impurities need to be removed. Normal filters can remove sediment particles. Once they are removed water needs fine filtration. Carbon activated filters can be used for this purpose. These filters remove odor-creating impurities like chlorine and chloramines. Special filters can be used to remove iron, manganese and iron sulphide. These particles may affect the taste of it. So it is necessary to remove so as to get conditioned water, which is safe to drink.
